Empowering Youth Workers through Art Therapy
The Art Sanctuary is a training project for youth workers that integrates art therapy into youth work practice, providing creative tools to support the mental health and emotional well-being of young people.
By combining non-formal education, artistic expression and emotional intelligence, the project turns art into a safe and transformative space where youth workers can learn how to accompany young people through stress, anxiety, trauma and everyday challenges in a more sensitive, engaging and human way.

🎯 Objectives
The project responds to the growing need for innovative, non-formal methods that help young people deal with emotional pressure, mental health struggles and social challenges.
By training youth workers in art therapy, The Art Sanctuary aims to:
- strengthen the professional toolkit of youth workers
- make mental health support more accessible and engaging
- offer non-verbal, creative spaces where young people can express and process emotions
- promote inclusion and participation of young people with fewer opportunities
The project is rooted in the values of inclusion, creativity, participation and mental health promotion within the Erasmus+ framework.
🔑 Key Objectives
✅ Enhance skills – Equipping youth workers with art therapy techniques
Provide youth workers with practical tools from art therapy (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and other creative methods) that they can integrate into their daily work with young people. These techniques will help them create safe, engaging spaces where emotions and experiences can be explored without judgment.
✅ Promote mental health – Supporting young people through creative methods
Use art as a non-verbal channel to address stress, anxiety, trauma and emotional overload. By designing creative, structured activities, youth workers will be able to support resilience, self-awareness and coping skills in young people, especially those who find it difficult to express themselves through words.
✅ Innovate youth work – Introducing non-verbal communication tools
Bring fresh approaches into youth work by using artistic processes as communication tools. Artwork becomes a way to “listen differently” to young people, especially those from marginalized or vulnerable backgrounds, allowing youth workers to better understand emotions, needs and personal stories.
✅ Empower youth workers – Addressing mental health creatively and sensitively
Strengthen the confidence of youth workers to talk about mental health, recognize early warning signs and take action in a respectful, non-clinical way. Through art-based methods and structured reflection, they will become more capable of initiating conversations, offering first support and connecting young people with additional services when needed.
📅 Activities
The project includes two main phases, ensuring both solid preparation and deep, experiential learning:
APV – Advance Planning Visit (Rome, Italy)
A short preparatory visit in Rome will gather one representative from each partner organisation. During the APV, partners will:
- review the programme, schedule and venue of the main training activity
- discuss participant profiles, needs and expectations
- agree on approaches to sensitive topics related to mental health and emotional well-being
- clarify roles, responsibilities and practical arrangements (logistics, communication, risk management, inclusion measures)
This visit ensures that the implementation phase is safe, coherent and aligned with the values of art therapy and non-formal learning.
Implementation Phase – Professional Development Activity for Youth Workers
The core activity of The Art Sanctuary is an 8-day residential training course for 25 youth workers from across Europe, hosted in Rome, Italy.
Through a structured programme of workshops, laboratories and reflection moments, participants will:
- explore art therapy methods (drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, mixed media, body-based and sensory activities)
- connect art practice with mental health topics (stress, anxiety, self-image, resilience, boundaries, relationships)
- experience non-formal learning methods such as group work, reflection circles, creative journaling and peer feedback
- co-create practical tools, session outlines and activity formats that they can bring back to their organisations
Inclusion is a core value: the project encourages participation of youth workers who work with young people with fewer opportunities, including those facing social, economic or geographical barriers.
